How Technology Can Help You Go on Safer and More Meaningful Dates

The majority of daters don’t feel safe on dating apps

According to a recent survey conducted by DatingNews, two-thirds of dating app users distrust the ability of the platforms to protect them from dangerous individuals and fraud. Gen Z demonstrated the highest skepticism, at 71%, followed by Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials, with 69%, 63%, and 62%, respectively. The most prevalent safety concerns were catfishing and fake profiles (35%), harassment or stalking (17%), financial fraud or romance scams (16%), and personal data leaks and privacy (13%).

Just 61% were willing to pay for secure messaging, mandatory ID verification, and other enhanced security features despite a majority of users desiring them. Almost a third (28%) thought basic security measures should be free. A vast majority, 81%, favored some ID verification to ensure safer interactions.

VR dating as a safer option

The combination of virtual reality and dating has consistently gained traction. VR dating is where VR tech is used to connect and interact with potential partners in a virtual environment. It leverages immersive VR experiences to create a sense of interactivity and presence that goes beyond traditional online communication methods.

VR dating is a safer alternative to conventional dating apps because users don’t exchange personal information right away, instead interacting through avatars. This anonymity helps protect them from harassment, catfishing, and unwanted advances, as there’s less pressure to meet in person, share real photos, etc.

VR platforms enhance safety through effective moderation tools and community guidelines. Many of these spaces utilize motion tracking and voice chat, making it more difficult for deceptive behavior to go undetected than in traditional apps. In combination with customizable privacy controls, these features provide users with a safer space and greater agency to explore potential romantic connections.

General-purpose dating apps cause dating fatigue

Another issue with traditional dating apps is the emotional toll they can take on users, especially when faced with unsuitable matches, rejection, or ghosting. The highs and lows can lead to disappointment and eventually burnout. Conversations that go nowhere and swiping through countless profiles cause dating fatigue. The lack of meaning leads people to approach dating apps with less enthusiasm or leave them entirely.

Users become emotionally detached due to dating apps’ repetitive nature, further reducing the chances of forming a connection. According to a 2024 survey by Forbes, dating app burnout is highest among Millennials (80%), followed by Gen Z, Gen X, and Boomers with 79%, 78%, and 70%, respectively.

The alternative: Shared activities, but without the risk

VR dating apps lend meaning to the matchmaking process by enabling users to engage in shared activities. They can engage in a myriad of interactive experiences, facilitating connections and potentially creating lasting memories. Shared activities such as solving puzzles, collaborating on a virtual art project, or engaging in virtual sports give the dating experience an element of fun and playfulness. This helps build connection and trust in a low-risk setting before people decide to take things offline.

Approaching new people is daunting for those who are shy or experience social anxiety. VR dating offers a virtual space for users to interact while maintaining a level of control and comfort. Individuals feel less anxious and more confident in this controlled environment, gradually becoming more comfortable in social situations. The ability to experiment with different social cues and conversation styles in a virtual setting is quite empowering, preparing users for real-life dating scenarios in 2025 and beyond.
